A PA system is a fully equipped audio system. A complete PA system contains everything you need to amplify the sound of an instrument, voice or other audio output. A PA system ensures that the input signal becomes audible to a large / larger audience. Consisting of loudspeakers, microphones, amplifiers and sometimes additional equipment such as mixers, stands, carrying cases and cables, PA systems are used everywhere. From performances in the park to public events, parties and celebrations, a PA system cannot be missed.

What is a PA system?

PA is an abbreviation for the term 'Public Address'. Perhaps after reading this term it will become a bit clearer in which direction you should think, but the term PA remains fairly cryptic of course. Fortunately, what the term indicates is a lot simpler, because PA systems are simply sound installations that are intended to amplify sound for a large audience. Chances are that you have already listened to many PA systems at festivals, tent parties, but also at weddings and in cafes. At these locations, use is made of a PA system to, for example, provide a band or DJ with amplification, but PA systems are also very suitable for giving speeches.

PA systems come in many different shapes and sizes. Usually PA systems are considered standalone systems and often consist of one or more active or passive PA loudspeakers placed on stands. This is the most common composition, but other compositions also occur.

What does a PA system consist of ?

A public address (PA) system is for amplifying the human voice. In its simplest form, it has a microphone, mixer, and loudspeakers. It all starts with the microphone (mic), which converts sound pressure to voltage. That means when you speak or sing into the mic, its magnetic force outputs a small amount of voltage. That voltage is then sent to either a mixer or loudspeaker for amplification. Once boosted by a power amplifier, the voltage is so high that it forces the speakers to move and recreate the sound pressure changes which first entered the mic. The result is a much louder sounding voice.

Speakers

The speakers can be seen as one of the most important parts of a PA system as the speakers produce the sound. PA speakers can vary in shape and size and can be active or passive. Active loudspeakers have a built-in amplifier while passive loudspeakers do not have a built-in amplifier and must be powered by an external amplifier. The choice of passive and active loudspeakers depends on the user's preference. Active speakers are normally preferred by users who enjoy an all-round and complete system. Passive speakers are suitable for those who want to add their own separate amplifier to their system.

the mixer

The mixer is the central point of your PA system, here you control the sound and volume coming out of your PA. Here all entrances and exits come together. You can see the mixer as the hub of your entire system and therefore the mixer is an important part of any fully functioning system.

Amplifiers

Whether you need an amplifier depends on the speakers you have. Those who use active speakers in their system do not need an additional amplifier. For those who have chosen to include passive speakers in their system, an amplifier is required.
